I painted this painting en plein air high above the Swartberg Pass, outside a desert town in South Africa called Prince Albert. The pass is a remarkable feat of engineering, and the views are breathtaking. I was high up above the canyon, alone with nothing but my easel, panel and painting gear. I was in heaven. I worked only in oils, capturing the late afternoon light. My favourite part of the experience was capturing the blue distant hills that seemed to go on forever.
