I painted this during a fellowship at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, where my painting practice was profoundly influenced by the writers, composers, and other visual artists in residence there. As someone who began my painting career later in life, taking this step to apply for a residency was intimidating, but opened a whole new world to me.
