Strix nebulosa Yosemitensis is a California endangered species and scientists estimate only 200-300 individuals exist in the wild. Although their potential habitat exists throughout northern CA, Approximately 65% of these remaining individuals live within the protected boundaries of Yosemite National Park. Threats include human disturbance, and fragmentation and damage to their habitat. Therefore, intact natural ecosystems like those in Yosemite appear critical for their survival as a species. Their nesting locations are kept secret to avoid disturbance. To chance encounter one of these enormous and incredibly beautiful owls is truly a magical experience.
